MP Roz Savage MBE is championing a bold plan for a new UK law to tackle the full scale of the climate and nature crisis. The CAN Bill presents us a vital chance to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. In this guest blog, Roz explains why farming is central to the plan and how farmers can play a role in supporting the bill.
When I think about the future of farming, I feel two things: hope and determination. Hope, because I’ve met so many farmers who are already making changes to restore nature and tackle the climate crisis. Determination, because the challenges we face are huge, and we need everyone - farmers, policymakers, and the public - pulling together to secure a better future for our countryside.
That’s why I’m so proud to be championing the Climate and Nature (CAN) Bill in Parliament. This isn’t just another piece of legislation - it’s an opportunity to put farming and nature at the heart of the UK’s response to the environmental emergency.
Why farming matters to the CAN Bill
I don’t need to tell you that farming is on the frontlines of the climate and nature crisis. You’ve seen it with your own eyes: unpredictable weather making harvests harder, soil health under threat, and the wildlife you grew up with disappearing from our fields and hedgerows.
But here’s the thing - farming isn’t just part of the solution; it is the solution. The CAN Bill recognises that. It aims to create a joined-up plan to tackle climate change and reverse the loss of nature, and it places farmers right at the center of that effort.
