We’re urging the Government to protect the farming budget to ensure a resilient future for farming. That’s why we’re also backing the RSPB’s petition calling for more investment in nature-friendly practices.

NFFN is putting pressure on the Government to safeguard the farming budget. Without proper funding, efforts to tackle climate change and protect food security will be at risk. Adequate investment is key to supporting nature-friendly practices that boost biodiversity, improve water quality, and make farms more resilient to extreme weather.

NFFN CEO Martin Lines has raised concerns about the Government’s commitment to farming along the sidelines of the Labour Party Conference, held in Liverpool in September. He highlighted the £358 million underspend of the farming budget by the previous administration as a clear sign that not enough is being done to help farmers transition to sustainable practices. “We need a farming budget that actually works. Current funding levels just aren’t enough to meet the Government’s own environmental targets,” Martin said.

To put extra pressure on the Government, we’re supporting the RSPB’s petition urging Chancellor Rachel Reeves to invest in nature-friendly farming. With 70% of UK land used for farming, we know our sector is key to nature’s recovery. If you agree, please sign the petition and help us show the Chancellor that farming and nature’s recovery need more investment. Sign the RSPB’s petition here.

A strategic Land Use Framework will enable farmers to optimise their land for multiple purposes, potentially increasing revenue streams.

Land Use Framework to be launched

At the Labour Party conference, we learned that the Land Use Framework will launch in November. This long-awaited strategy is an important step towards a more sustainable future for farming. However, we urge the Government to ensure it has the ambition needed to build a resilient, economically strong agricultural sector.

NFFN CEO Martin Lines said: “A strategic Land Use Framework is crucial for the UK’s food security and for helping farmers achieve their environmental goals. It will enable farmers to optimise their land for multiple purposes, potentially increasing revenue streams, while also supporting practices like agroforestry.”

Survey results show concern

A recent NFFN survey reveals widespread concern among nature-friendly farmers about the impact of climate change on their businesses, echoing new analysis that suggests the UK may face one of its worst harvests ever. The survey also revealed a shocking lack of confidence in Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and his cabinet’s support for the farming sector.

Nature-friendly farmers are feeling squeezed by climate change causing havoc to their businesses.

“We urgently need a clear and ambitious vision for the future of farming, alongside a well-funded, transparent roadmap to deliver it. Our survey makes it clear that nature-friendly farmers are feeling squeezed by climate change causing havoc to their businesses. They produce high-quality, sustainable food, care for nature and support biodiversity, yet they are not adequately rewarded for their efforts,” Martin concludes.
