Over the past year, we’ve been working hard in and out of parliament to get politicians listening. We’ve given evidence to committee inquiries, hosted events in Westminster, attended the Prime Minister’s ‘Farm to Fork’ Summit at Number 10 and connected MPs with farmers across the country.

With the general election now looming, we must double down on our shared ambition for a better farming future. We need to increase understanding across the political spectrum of the importance of farming in meeting so many of society’s needs.

MP engagement will not always be easy, though. Political advocacy takes time, collaboration and perseverance, and we need fellow nature-friendly farmers with us because the NFFN wouldn’t be here without you.

In times of political difficulty, we have a choice: let policy shape the people or mobilise the people to shape policy. The former means we sit idly and take Government policy on the chin. The latter means we work together to speak up on the issues that will influence future generations.

What is Suits to Welly Boots?

Suits to Welly Boots is NFFN England's campaign to support farmer engagement with MPs. Right now, policymakers are in the throes of making decisions which will shape the future of farming, making engaging with MPs on the ground particularly important. There is not one constituency disconnected from agriculture, and no single MP can ignore its future.

To ensure this future is resilient and adapted to the challenges of a changing climate, we’re working closely with nature-friendly farmers across the country to showcase the value of incorporating nature into the way we produce our food.

NFFN England wants to go further and faster in its drive to facilitate on-farm engagements with MPs, and we want the voices of our farmer members to be heard. We’re primarily engaging with MPs across the UK through constituency farm visits. These visits are critical in demonstrating real examples of the value of nature-friendly farming, and in deepening politicians’ understanding of the issues at hand.

The MPs we’ve met have been receptive to our messages and visibly impressed by seeing how food production goes hand-in-hand with working in harmony with the environment, including the far-reaching health, social and economic impacts this way of farming has.

Get Involved

The Suits to Welly Boots programme provides farmers with the training, tools and support they’ll need to host their MP on their farm. Farmers will have access to an online training session, a bank of resources to aid in the process, and the unlimited support of our MP Farmer Engagement Officer. Our aim is to ensure every farm story makes a genuine impact and that each farmer feels confident and prepared to engage with a political audience.

We are looking for farmers who are:

  • Passionate about maintaining the direction of travel towards a more nature-friendly farming future 

  • Taking active steps to farm in harmony with nature that can demonstrate the real-world value of this to MPs

  • Able to adapt to changing circumstances, and happy to get creative when we need to take a different approach to certain MPs and constituencies.
