RSPB’s Hope Farm is working on a carbon calculator study, as part of their Carbon Farming Project. The project’s core aim is to improve ways of accurately recording and reducing the farm’s carbon footprint, and to see how these methods impact biodiversity.

At this point in the project, the farm plans to run three carbon calculators across several farms and farming systems in the UK. To do this they’re looking for volunteer farmers – in particular a peatland farmer – to gather information on the potential strengths and weaknesses of each tool* for each system. This will allow Hope Farm to more accurately advise farmers and policy makers which ones may best suit their farm or support different schemes. It will also allow the farm to feedback to the toolkit makers about what they do well and what needs improvement.

Volunteering

We welcome interest from farmers who have had experience in using carbon calculators or soil analysis tests, and those that will need to be trained.

Naturally, it will be a faster and more straightforward process for farmers that already have the practical knowledge. However, if you don’t have experience in these areas please bear in mind the extra workload in gathering the required data.
